Acne Q & A

What is acne?

Acne is a skin condition characterized by clogged hair follicles. Your skin is covered in hair follicles, which act as tiny shafts into the skin. Your follicles allow an oily substance called sebum to emerge and lubricate your skin and dead cells to exit the skin.

In people with acne, some of the oil and dead skin cells become trapped within the follicle. Bacteria rapidly multiply, creating inflammation and eventually intruding into the surrounding skin cells.

Acne can develop in several different ways. You might notice whiteheads or blackheads on your skin or see inflamed bumps that may or may not have a pus-filled top. Some acne remains trapped deep beneath the skin's surface and can be very painful.

What could be causing my acne?

Numerous things can cause or exacerbate acne. Some people naturally produce more oil in their skin than others. There also seems to be a genetic component to acne, so your risk may be elevated if a close relative experienced frequent breakouts.

Additional factors that can cause or worsen acne include:

  • Hormonal shifts, especially during puberty
  • Certain medications
  • Environmental irritants
  • Certain foods
  • Overstimulating your skin with scrubbing, or excessive exfoliation
  • High levels of stress

If you experience any form of acne, trying to squeeze or extract clogged follicles will only make matters worse.

What kinds of treatments can help with acne?

Treating acne begins by trying to determine the root cause of the problem. If a poor diet might be contributing to breakouts, finding ways to incorporate healthier foods into your nutrition plan can make a big difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Supplements and intravenous (IV) nutrition therapy can also help.

Microneedling, a treatment that creates tiny channels into the deeper layers of skin, can help treat acne by reducing the volume of oil your skin produces. This treatment also reduces inflammation and boosts circulation.

Medical-grade chemical peels are another way to treat acne without pharmaceutical interventions. Carefully formulated chemical solutions are applied to the skin to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells, revealing a layer of fresh, healthy skin. This can help unclog pores and reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

Microcurrent therapy works by delivering a mild electrical current into your skin, prompting your body to create new collagen cells. This helps to smooth acne scarring and refine the texture of your skin.
